Political Developments in Tigray: New Cabinet Faces Criticism, Peace Deal Implementation and Election Concerns Loom

Mekelle, Tigray – : Saturday, May 3, 2025– The political landscape in Tigray is undergoing significant shifts, marked by the appointment of a new interim president and cabinet, but also facing challenges related to inclusivity, peace deal implementation, and upcoming elections.

Lieutenant General Tadese Werede, the newly appointed Tigray Interim President, has announced a new cabinet, aiming for “reconciliation and unity.” The cabinet’s size has been reduced, signaling a potential restructuring of regional governance.

However, this new cabinet has faced immediate criticism from opposition parties within Tigray.1 These parties cite a “lack of inclusivity” and “dominance by one group,” raising concerns about the representation of diverse political voices in the interim administration.2 Reports also indicate that Lieutenant General Tadese Werede has reinstated army members previously suspended by his predecessor, further complicating the political dynamics.3

Concerns persist regarding the full implementation of the Pretoria peace deal, signed in November 2022 to end the conflict between the Ethiopian government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).4 Key aspects of the agreement, such as the disarmament and reintegration of former combatants and the return of displaced persons, are still being addressed, with progress remaining uneven.

Discussions are also underway regarding the upcoming 2026 elections. The political climate within Tigray, particularly the perceived lack of inclusivity in the interim government, is raising concerns about the fairness and transparency of the electoral process.

Adding to the complexity, reports indicate political splits within the TPLF, potentially hindering regional stability.5 Critics also allege that the interim government is prioritizing control over regional resources rather than addressing the needs of the Tigrayan people.

These developments underscore the complex political situation in Tigray, as the region strives for stability and recovery in the aftermath of conflict. The coming months will be crucial in determining whether the interim administration can effectively address these challenges and pave the way for a more inclusive and peaceful future for Tigray.
